Musically lyric sheets are like wearing "Depends". If you really love a song, and ESPECIALLY if you wrote wrote a song that people love and relate to you would think you might remember the words? Particularly if you have been doing a song for 30 plus years. On the other hand "back-in-the-day" Bobby could scramble the words to "Truckin'" and yet somehow remember every verse and every line of epic Dylan songs like "Desolation Row", Queen Jane and Memphis Blues Again. Go figure... And Uncle John's was even harder. They rarely got the sequence of verses straight.
They quit doing St Stephen because as Jerry said, "It's a musical cop. It wants to go a certain way..." Of course there was always the audience to sing along, and they KNEW all the words...
